Felicity: Why, Aims!

Its high time that we start thinking – thinking on why Felicity, why the whole process of organizing a fest? What are the aims and objectives we are trying to achieve? Is it a time for celebration? Or something to flaunt our achievements?

I believe that if we have a set of objectives clear, the contradictions within ourselves about issues will drastically reduce. In fact, whenever we have a deadlock, we can turn to these aims/ principles for guidance.

So I’ll encourage everyone to start coming with ideas on the fest- what it means to them, and what we’re trying to achieve!

And yeah, these are Mr.Marathe’s words about Felicity:

“A time of enjoyment, reveling, appreciation of privilege, freedom and comfort given to us, sense of celebration, the feeling and hope that everything is alright with the world. A feeling that we will make the world a better place than we found it.”

Literary Part of Video

I wrote the following text which is used to describe Literary Events in the Felicity Promo.

Can you describe the ruckus?

Are you trying to make that crumbled up paper perfect again?

Do you get into typos, gravity and other mishaps?

Does occasional piece of fiction quench your thrist?

Then we have these sequence of events just for you.

Quiz: For whom gray matters, keep their ears near the grapevine and activate their neurons.

J.A.M: Focus your talent and push your limits of spontaneity, where it will do the most good. Call it J.A.M-ming already.

WTGW: Love to savour the alphabet soup and words are your armour. Check this out.

Journo Phobia: People who aspire to create some hullabaloo via media by saying ”Lord James is dead” to people who never knew Lord James was alive and for those who strive to re-think the box, this is your designated area.

Mind’s Eye: Let the cat out of the bag and get the pleasure of filling up wacky questionnaires, comic strips without dialogues along with cooking up phrases for the images shown.

Here points are awarded for being interesting or funny (and, very occasionally, right). It’s about finding undiscovered connections and seeing hidden patterns.

Whatever is interesting we are interested in. Whatever is not interesting, we are even more interested in. Everything is interesting if looked at in the right way.

And it echoes the “I feel good” factor. No one need ever be bored again

If anybody who accidentally stumbles upon this blog has anything to add or change, that would be appreciated.

A To-Do List for Literatio

Okay, so this is my first blog for felicity, but then again, it’s only because Karan told me to and it’s kinda hard to say no to Maroo.

Literary events have been really unsuccessful in Felicity. Even though every year two or three (really good) people do turn up just for the Lit Events… that still isn’t enough (at least from the organizers’ point of view). This year we want to change all that. Actually, this year we want to change a lot of stuff related to Literary, I’m coming to that.

Okay, so — Literary — unsuccessful — why? :

  • Not many people are involved.
  • There aren’t any new ideas… we always have the same events which leave the same bad taste in mouth when not properly organized.
  • Even with good ideas, there aren’t people to implement them.
  • There isn’t much in the way of campaigning for Lit Events… so, no people.
  • Even if people turn up, they tend to prefer going to the cultural events which, sadly, are held at the same time as Lit events and offer more cash as prize money.
  • Even if people turn up AND they come for Lit events, since there is a dearth of people involved as organizers most of the events end up being poorly managed or scrapped (no, no… not orkut).

Well, I hope I’ve made myself clear and if you’ve been really attentive you’ll figure out what the root cause of the problem is : ___people___ (or rather, the lack of them)

/* Before I move on, there’s something I’d like to clarify. Of all the -ists and -ics I may be, a pessimist I am not (Karan, I hope you’re listening). I’m willing to work my arse off for Felicity and for Literatio. I hope I’m clear on that point */

So, we need ideas. Loads of them. We need people and we need ideas. I’m now going to list down things which we really need (and those we do not):

We Need:

  • People: Involved in organizing the events. Involved in (indirectly) helping with the events. Involved in campaigning for the events. Involved in getting sponsors for the events. (and people to actually take part in the events)
  • Events: Or rather, new ones. The same old events every year (even with new crap names likes WordsWorth) don’t make much of a difference. We want new events and a better flavor for the old ones.
  • Campaigning: We want people (yes, I know… again) to actually go around (good) colleges and promote the Lit Events. (I want to go to NIFT… I hope someone’s listening)
  • Sponsorships: Even though Lit Events are better than cultural [:O)] we end up with less participation, because we don’t really have good enough prizes. (Lit Events need brains… brains => more value => better prizes)
  • Mutual Exclusion with Cultural Events: I’ve talked about this a lot. Cultural Vs Lit isn’t much of a contest. We get our bums kicked every time.
  • Names: Names of people to blame if things go wrong again… Just kidding, we need better names of events and of the whole Literary thing (just look at the crap I’ve written in the title and you’ll know why).
  • People: Okay, so again. But I hope you understand why!

We Don’t Need:

  • Crappy Mess Food: pass;
  • The Same Sys Admins: pass;
  • People who come to Lit meetings just for time-pass. There are better ways to pass time. Play games, orkut, watch a movie… just don’t bother us if you’re not interested.

We’ve had two meeting till date and the question is: What have we done? Well, we’ve solved the people problem. I have ten names with me (which is quite impressive, considering last years’ one). All of them seem interested (barring one, but I’ll manage to get myself motivated enough). We’ve decided to organize some events in the Sunday Carnival that’s coming up, just to see how good we are as a team.

That’s about it.

Workshops

Well considering the fact that we want to do something different this time at Felicity 2008 an intriguing thought struck me when i saw the sites of the much famed Saarang and Shaastra. We have never focussed on workshops as such so during Felicity this could just be the time.We can have full fledged sessions running all three days and of what i can see there is a very wide genre of topics to explore here.

1)We can make amendments to Kalakshetra by getting a Hairstyling Workshop there(streaking is a craze these days) can also plan on getting workshops on the lines of cartooning and the most interesting Horoscopes and Astrology.Everyone likes to know about their future so no need to guess people wont be interested in learning a bit about it also.

2)On the technical side we can have an AI workshop considering the fact that the three main research fields here are Datamining,ComputerVision and LanguageTechnologies we will get many volunteers to present new AI techniques. This is one field where we can prove we are better than other colleges.Shaastra came up with an innovative idea of a programming contest called AI wars which was also very interesting

3)On gaming side we can have a Gamers den where all our gamers here at IIIT can possibly give some info to ppl regarding how to setup private networks or a Local LAN and get into multiplayer games right from home..(Sharat Chandra)

Finally all this acts like a bonus to our brochure workshops can be used for good publicity and will attract crowds for sure .This could just be the wild card we need to make our fest unique………

Telugu Antyakshari

The idea is to conduct a Telugu antyakshari cum movie quiz….We will have some 4 to 5 rounds…The questions will be of different types starting with singing a song with the last alphabet to giving a duet pair of singers or actors on which songs hav to be sung….and similar stuff….I shall try to give it a clear shape in a few more days by discussing with some other people who are interested in the same…..I was pretty impressed by the way Anand Rathi sr conducted the contest last time….I am inspired by the ideas and the style of anchoring…The contest will be mainly based on the music part concentrating less on the movie details(like director, producer etc..but it deals with the music director, singers etc)….I’ll be glad if people come up with suggestions and ideas…..

The Muzikk Game

We have been through antaksharis and other singing events in this game what is done is that it is conducted at 3 levels. The contestant from a group picks up his choice randomly from the chits present

Level1)Intertone;The contestant along with another of the same group will be in a duet and when the judge says stop the other contestant will have to pickup from where the other left.It will be fully dependent upon the coordination of the contestants…

Level2)Imitate:This is the next higher level where u will be asked to sing a song if not exactly but almost like the singer whose chit has been picked up.The ease at which you are while imitating will be considered.Consider straight from Himesh to anybody :P

Level3) Remix:This is the toughest where you will be asked to remix a song based on these lines of tune and present it in a novel way.Innovativeness will be considered here

At every stage the contestant can take the bid to go a level higher from where he is at present if the contestant wants to score more points.Failure to tackle such cases may lead to penalty also…

PS 1This is just a basic overview

Ps2 Please file in your posts regarding cultural events coz only these will be considered for experimentation

Taglines/Logos and Active Participation

As Harsha has officially sent the mail regarding the Logos and Tagline competition we can start writing a few decent oneliners mostly but there is a doubt of what exaclty is expected from a tagline and a logo.Taglines are used mostly like repetitive phrases during promotion or advertisements where whenever one speaks them out they lay a huge impact on the listeners about the agenda and interestsof the company.A logo on the other hand is more of a promotional symbol which emphasizes on presenting the tags through an eyecatching image out of which even a layman can make some sense.

The main question is now that considering Felicity which is our annual cultural event and is far different from any company promos or  hifi ads what kind of a logo is needed coz we have got a faint idea about tagline because of a few keywords and knowledge on the backgrounds of earlier felicities. How to frame a logo is still a question unless few people have some opinions about it and it would be really encouraging to share your views about how to get the logo work done.Awating some interesting responses on innovative approaches and methodologies…..
