A To-Do List for Literatio

Okay, so this is my first blog for felicity, but then again, it’s only because Karan told me to and it’s kinda hard to say no to Maroo.

Literary events have been really unsuccessful in Felicity. Even though every year two or three (really good) people do turn up just for the Lit Events… that still isn’t enough (at least from the organizers’ point of view). This year we want to change all that. Actually, this year we want to change a lot of stuff related to Literary, I’m coming to that.

Okay, so — Literary — unsuccessful — why? :

  • Not many people are involved.
  • There aren’t any new ideas… we always have the same events which leave the same bad taste in mouth when not properly organized.
  • Even with good ideas, there aren’t people to implement them.
  • There isn’t much in the way of campaigning for Lit Events… so, no people.
  • Even if people turn up, they tend to prefer going to the cultural events which, sadly, are held at the same time as Lit events and offer more cash as prize money.
  • Even if people turn up AND they come for Lit events, since there is a dearth of people involved as organizers most of the events end up being poorly managed or scrapped (no, no… not orkut).

Well, I hope I’ve made myself clear and if you’ve been really attentive you’ll figure out what the root cause of the problem is : ___people___ (or rather, the lack of them)

/* Before I move on, there’s something I’d like to clarify. Of all the -ists and -ics I may be, a pessimist I am not (Karan, I hope you’re listening). I’m willing to work my arse off for Felicity and for Literatio. I hope I’m clear on that point */

So, we need ideas. Loads of them. We need people and we need ideas. I’m now going to list down things which we really need (and those we do not):

We Need:

  • People: Involved in organizing the events. Involved in (indirectly) helping with the events. Involved in campaigning for the events. Involved in getting sponsors for the events. (and people to actually take part in the events)
  • Events: Or rather, new ones. The same old events every year (even with new crap names likes WordsWorth) don’t make much of a difference. We want new events and a better flavor for the old ones.
  • Campaigning: We want people (yes, I know… again) to actually go around (good) colleges and promote the Lit Events. (I want to go to NIFT… I hope someone’s listening)
  • Sponsorships: Even though Lit Events are better than cultural [:O)] we end up with less participation, because we don’t really have good enough prizes. (Lit Events need brains… brains => more value => better prizes)
  • Mutual Exclusion with Cultural Events: I’ve talked about this a lot. Cultural Vs Lit isn’t much of a contest. We get our bums kicked every time.
  • Names: Names of people to blame if things go wrong again… Just kidding, we need better names of events and of the whole Literary thing (just look at the crap I’ve written in the title and you’ll know why).
  • People: Okay, so again. But I hope you understand why!

We Don’t Need:

  • Crappy Mess Food: pass;
  • The Same Sys Admins: pass;
  • People who come to Lit meetings just for time-pass. There are better ways to pass time. Play games, orkut, watch a movie… just don’t bother us if you’re not interested.

We’ve had two meeting till date and the question is: What have we done? Well, we’ve solved the people problem. I have ten names with me (which is quite impressive, considering last years’ one). All of them seem interested (barring one, but I’ll manage to get myself motivated enough). We’ve decided to organize some events in the Sunday Carnival that’s coming up, just to see how good we are as a team.

That’s about it.

  1. literatio, man this reminds me of the “literacy ratio”. anyways, shift is not bad as in “Shift the Ape” from Chronicles of Narnia series (a happy resident of Narnia).

    about the above post: affirmative.

  2. Yes, people read this blog. Only a few i suppose.

    You need people… i’m in.

    I believe a good video about the literary events can rope in sponsers and more participants. And i’ve shown you (and to the literary team) my idea of a literary video. Ya, i know that the video i presented was only 20 secs long and was too fast to know what was written (i only had a couple of hours to work on it and i’ve never done this kind of animation before ). I’ve partly remapped the time and uploaded the video in 234/Uploads2/Videos/Felicity.
    The final video will be similar but better provided i have the right content.

    People (those in the literary team and those who want to make Felicity 08 bigger, better and creative) have a look at the video and think of some good phrases/questions and descriptions of the main events.

    I’ve always wanted a seperate video for the literary events, so if people come up with good content then we can have a 1.5 or 2 mins video to attract sponsers.

    Those who dont believe in trying something new, something that wasn’t done before in IIIT and infact in any technical institute in India; dont bother downloading the video.

  3. First post on literary events.

    And advertising the literary events is also important.
    I will get back to u soon regarding this.

    ps:I read the complete post.

  4. I mean advertising through website.. ;)

  5. Well compiled. And if you’re willing to work your arse off, way to go man! We’ll do well dont worry, especially now that we have people :)
    We’ll have a seperate team for sponsorships of lit events. Don’t worry about that. WE’ll hunt book stores, gift shops, newspapers etc till we get enough money.
    As for campaigning, it’ll have to be LIt specific. As you suggested, we’ll send people around for it.
    Cheers!

  6. @neuron… bulla!!
    @bhargava… man, you rock! and yeah, we’ll work on the video too. how about the next meeting?
    @abhilashi… yeah you’re right. but that dept is yours… give lit a space equivalent to what the other events are gonna get.
    @karan… nah, i just wrote that so that others who read it get impressed. i’m not really a very hard-worker. yeah, campaigning work toh we’ll divide amongst the literati.. but the sponsorships.. you guys do yourself.

    @world… I rock!
