Meeting with the Freshers

We had a meeting with the freshers yesterday, an introduction to Felicity. The response was pretty decent, around 120 students turned up. In fact, they were pretty exited when we showed them last year’s Promotional video.

            The idea behind such an introduction was to make them feel that they’re a part of it already. When we were in our first year, we had such an introduction only in January. I never felt involved with the fest, I felt like an outsider. Last year around, it was much better, both for the first years and the second years. Let’s see how well we can do in involving people this year.

           

Social Responsibility

According to the definition and meaning of Felicity given by Dr.Marathe, the fest is about celebration, but in a much wider sense. Of course the celebration is about our own achievements. Its about the appreciation of freedom and enjoyment of privileges given to us, but at the same time, we should also think about them. Aren’t the others much less privileged. Receiving the best education, are we not the future leaders of the country? And being so, isn’t it our duty to give back something to the society? Should we not put in a little effort to making this place a better one than we found it? We believe that only by doing so, we’d have achieved celebration in the true sense.

 

            It was agreed upon that whatever we do, should be a heart felt action, and not doing something just for the heck of it. We are NOT looking for publicity, what we are looking to is making a difference to the society.

 

The ideas for the same during the meeting were:

1)      Gram Seva: Service to the villagers. We can take up some form of vocational education for the youngsters of a particular village and try to make the youth ready for some kind of a job. Every week, 3-4 students can go to the village and undertake the teaching work. In all, we can teach them for 18 weeks. Shikha said that we can help them in irrigaional methods etc. Chand suggested that instead of villages, we could take up a slum for a start, as pushing on to villages right at the start maybe a little too ambitious. This should cost the treasury around 50000 bucks.

2)      According to Aniket, we should take up some form of art revival. Arts like puppet shows, or classical dance forms. The same can be given encouragement and asked to perform on the first day of Felicity, on stage.

3)      We can also take up the revival of Yoga/Vedas by teaching and spreading.

4)      Chand said that we could take up the revival of handicrafts like in Shilparaman.

5)      We could take up the improvement of lives of say, 10 prisoners. Bereft of love, these prisoners do not have much of a chance of remorse. We will give them love, and education over a period of time.

6)      Similarly, we can catch 10 people affected by natural tragedies and improve their lives.

7)      It was agreed upon the fact that we need more ideas. These ideas should be thought over by everyone and discussed with Dr. Sangal, Dr. Mitra and Dr. Harjinder.

Video meeting 2

The second video meeting was held in the corridor near Ug2 ( ) .

The things which were discussed were :-

–> Mascot or Video Narrator :- I suggested that we can have a narrator which can also be our mascot and he will be guiding through the whole video . Abhilash suggested another idea of using some human who is wearing some mask or colored face just like the pepsi ad and he can act as a Narrator . Many people agreed to the idea of keeping a narrator if its better than the absurd smiley that we had last year .

–> Introducing events :- It was decided that in the next meeting we will be deciding the main events which should be introduced in the video and karan has been asked to get the list of all the events

–> Ideas :-

1. Sambhav’s ( a.k.a GenX ) idea ( narrated by piyush ) was to have the starting where a drop of water drops in a ocean and a island comes up having a big tree in the between . The tree will be a banyan tree ( i.e IIIT logo ) and after that a text displaying “IIIT presents …. ” .Idea was cool but banyan tree on an island .

2.Varun ( a.k.a Remo ) had an idea of having a waterfall and when the zoom into the water which is falling and it wont be water but bits of codes and when it falls the lake will be containing the output or error messages .

3. I suggested the book idea of introducing every event and then turning the page , but this idea is very old .

4.Sandeep had an idea of keeping a rangoli background when we are showing the cultural part so that it creates a nice effect . And he said the border can also be mixed with the book idea .

–> Length of the video : it was decided to keep the video short at max of 4 mins because nobodys gonna watch a video more than 5 mins .

–> IT was decided to keep multiple videos so that we can have seprate videos for campaining and sponsorships .

–> Varun will be in charge of the game videos and he has said the max length will be 30 secs and he has asked to have a discussion on what games to be used next year .

And karan has taken the responsibility to get the permissions for conducting meetings in some room on 3rd floor .

The next meeting will be held after design team meeting .And those who are intrested in coding part are asked to install 3ds max and start playing with it … presently we have 4 people who know 3ds max and one expert ( Bhargav ) .

Bhargav’s and psss absence made the meeting short .

Web Design Team: Meet 2

The things on which we had a discussion are the following:

Database:

Shrikant presented a database design. The entities were events, participants, organizers and sponsors. It was accepted with slight modifications.

Coding Standards:

Kulbir emphasized the use of coding standards to facilitate team-work and debugging. The following points must be kept in mind while coding:

• Style: All coders are expected to use a common .vimrc
• Sensible variable names
• Avoiding the use of constants
• Modularity; it should also be kept in mind that the design is flexible. CSS files should be separate, javascript in a separate file and so on. HTML file should contain only html.

Template:

 

 

Piyush came up with a nice template. People appreciated the design scheme. Shikha also presented an idea towards the end of meeting.

By the next meeting the website design team wishes to finalize the template for felicity website. People should come up with more ideas and share with others.

IIIT Campus walkthrough

While i was working on my project , i got an idea . How about creating a walkthrough program of IIIT campus ?? .. it will be just like a OpenGl programs you made in Graphics course with left,right, near , far , top  , bottom , rotation movements . It will be a great attraction at the campus , and if we can afford an online version then it would be awesome .Its gonna be easy for us because i am working on a similar project and i will be creating walk through of Charminar . And it will be just changing the model and we can use the the same model made by our seniors

Technical Details :-

Our seniors had used 3ds max and my program will support 3ds max . The walk through program will be made in Open Scene Graph and will be supported easily on OS >=FC4  .

Web design team first meeting

Today’s meeting started at 9:40 pm.

Shashank has come with a presentation and raised lot of questions which led to interesting discussion
Questions raised in the meeting:

1)What we need to learn from previous felicity site ??
2)What we should show on this year’s site ??
3)How we should show it ??
4)Coding

An issue was raised whether we should reflect the theme of felicity on Home page.

The team decided to see the Database Design of previous felicity website and use certain aspects of it.The design should be such that all the statastics can be easily extracted.

Then we had a discussion on what we should present on the website.
All the members have agreed that certain things are mandatory to show on home page.

• Felicity logo at top
• login form
• search
• Events Bar(technical,cultural,literary etcc)
• Task bar (home,faq,forum,about us etc)
• Sponsers
• Contact

And then links to other events will follow.They will describe the events etc..
A part from these people wanted things like

->Pics of previous felicty or Promotional pics
->audio matching the theme of website

Audio shouldn’t be in a loop.

It should stop automatically after some time.(10 seconds)

->Keyboard Shortcuts

For example imagine that music is playing on website and you don’t see a button to stop it.But we are accustomed to press space bar to pause it.

Pressing space bar can act as a shortcut to stop music.

->Changing Theme

Here we not only want to change the color but we also want to change the images on website.Change how mouse pointer looks.

->Size

An option will be provided to view web page in what ever resolution the user wishes.
For example:1024×768,600×800 etcc

->Flash

Whether we should use flash or not will need another discussion.

->Make Organiser’s Job easy

It was decided to design the database to make the organiser job easy.
He should have seperate login to edit deatails of his event.

How to show ??

 

 

All the people who came for the discussion agreed on making a sample web page and presenting it in next meeting

Everyone has to maintain standard coding standards.
This will be discussed again in the next meeting.

Minutes of the Video Team Meeting

Well, we discussed the following points:

1) The importance of animation in the video

“The technical companies would definitely be interested in the anime factor and it must be part of the video” says piyush who was strongly supported PK.

“But, when we went for sponsorship at some mall. The guy over there was not at all interested in yahoo messenger smiley falling and all that. He just wanted to see public swaying in rock concert and more” argued Karan.

Then we concluded on a idea of two videos. One showing all the technical aspects most probably in animation followed by a second video picturing the cultural and literary events.

” We can easily combine both the videos by doing the right video/audio editing for showcasing it in various colleges and to people who have time” added Maruti.

And it also seemed the audio also played a vital role, last time they used only one Mp3 which was sound track of the game Halo. This time may be we can rely on the OST’s of 300 and more.

Next, Bhargava talked about the softwares involved in the process of video making and modeling like 3ds Max, Maya and After Effects.

Ideas generated:

Abhilash says “There should be a mascot which introduces various events of fest as in the ad of asian games”.

People really get attracted to the video when the sequence of events in the video suddenly becomes slow (everything drastically changes to slow motion). For example, for the Zombie Zone part, we can take the NFS Most Wanted clip in which car is falling from a height, show the falling process slowly and again speed up when falls down on the ground. We can focus on number plate on which it will be written “Be The Speed”. From the Counter Strike clip we can show the bullet slowly coming out of the gun and hitting the target on which “Be The Target” and then lastly “Be at The Zombie Zone”.

Also can start the video by showing the earth, then converging to hyderabad followed by our college and to the felicity rock concert showing junta enjoying the music and continue from there.

Finally, we can show a 2-D map of our college. Stick little pieces of paper with “Kalakshetra”,”Felicity is here” and so on written on them in various locations with a pin kinda thing. Show each paper and describe those events in detail (More graphic version of this idea is the background video when titles come in the film “Rang De Basanti”).

Ideas for felicity 08

The clouds of fun have passed away… Felicity ‘07 was an awesome success. Lets get together to emulate… na, better it this time around.

So guys and gals pool in your ideas for this felicity
